In recent years, clear aligner treatment has become one of the most talked-about and preferred methods among patients seeking orthodontic treatment. In this treatment, often chosen by patients with high aesthetic expectations, many problems that can be corrected with conventional orthodontic methods can be treated effectively thanks to digital planning tools and the orthodontist's detailed evaluation.
However, it is inevitable that misconceptions will arise about such a widespread treatment. In this article, we discuss the three most common misconceptions we encounter about clear aligner treatment and the facts behind them.
This article is based on the views of our orthodontist, Dr. Ela Uzun, on clear aligner treatment.
Why Is Clear Aligner Treatment So Popular?
Clear aligners are especially preferred by patients who are bothered by the look of brackets and want a more comfortable treatment process that does not affect their social life. The main advantages of this method are:
- The aligners are hard to notice, even up close.
- They can be removed for a short time on special occasions.
- Because the teeth and aligners can be cleaned easily, oral hygiene is easier to maintain.
- The treatment process is planned and monitored digitally.
Myth 1: “Clear Aligners Can't Straighten Teeth Well Enough”
One of the most common misconceptions is that aligners only work for mild crowding and cannot straighten teeth sufficiently. In fact, clear aligners are custom-designed to apply controlled force to each tooth.
In each aligner, these forces are distributed in a balanced way and tooth movements are planned step by step. When necessary, small attachments placed on the tooth surface help the aligner grip the tooth more effectively. As a result, many orthodontic movements can be achieved successfully with clear aligners. Which problems can be treated with aligners is decided after a detailed examination.
Myth 2: “I'm Too Old for Orthodontic Treatment”
The idea that “I'm too old now, I can't have orthodontic treatment” is largely no longer valid today. Clear aligner treatment can be used across a wide age range, from early childhood when baby teeth are still present to adulthood.
What matters in treatment is not age, but the health of the teeth and the tissues around them. As long as there is a healthy bone structure and a healthy tooth–tissue relationship, clear aligner treatment can be safely planned at older ages too. In adults, orthodontic treatment is also frequently used for purposes such as space management before implants, closing gaps between teeth or adjusting tooth positions before aesthetic procedures.
Myth 3: “Wearing Aligners Only at Night Is Enough”
The idea that teeth can be straightened by wearing aligners only while sleeping is not true. For effective and healthy tooth movement, aligners need to be worn regularly for 20–22 hours a day.
Aligners should only be removed while eating and brushing your teeth. Wearing them for less time can delay the teeth reaching their planned position and extend the treatment time.
Who Is Suitable for Clear Aligner Treatment?
When assessing suitability for clear aligner treatment, a few basic criteria are considered:
- Healthy bone and gum tissue around the teeth
- The existing orthodontic problem being treatable with aligners
- The patient understanding the treatment process and having the discipline to wear the aligners as instructed
Clear aligner treatment is a method that requires patient cooperation and active participation. Wearing the aligners for the recommended time and attending check-ups directly affect the success of the treatment.
