This is one of the questions we hear most often in pediatric dentistry.
Yes, baby teeth fall out when the time comes. But that does not mean they are unimportant until their job is done.
Baby teeth do not only help with chewing; they also play a role in a child's speech development, in the healthy development of the face and jaws, and in keeping the space needed for permanent teeth to come in in the right position.
Every baby tooth has a natural period during which it should stay in the mouth. When a baby tooth is lost much earlier than this due to decay or infection, the neighboring teeth can drift into the gap. This can reduce the space reserved for the permanent tooth coming in underneath and contribute to crowding or lack of space in later years.
What's more, the tooth does not even have to be lost completely for this to happen. Decay that develops between the baby molars in particular can gradually reduce the natural width of the tooth and its contact with the neighboring tooth. As the teeth move closer together unnoticed, the space reserved for the permanent teeth can quietly shrink.
Advanced decay does not only affect the tooth itself. It can cause problems such as pain, difficulty chewing, infection and discomfort in daily life. In some cases, the developing permanent tooth, which lies close to the roots of the baby tooth, can also be affected.
Another important point appears once the permanent teeth start to come in. Active decay in baby teeth can act as a reservoir for decay-causing bacteria in the mouth. This can mean that newly erupted permanent teeth come into a higher-risk environment.
That is why keeping baby teeth healthy is not only about protecting those teeth; it also means preparing a healthier mouth for the permanent teeth.
